Five Incense Fragrances That Leave Church Associations Behind

5 min readErnast Flermont30

Salt, white musk, cypress and dry woods change incense more profoundly than one might expect. In this selection, the material can feel transparent, like a sea breeze, a forest or spicy warmth.

Ладан без церковных ассоциаций: 5 прозрачных, солёных и древесных ароматов

Incense is easy to recognise on a blotter by its dry resinous character, a trace of smoke, and peppery or camphoraceous facets. Its church-like image usually comes from the combination of dense resins, soot, wax and dark wood. Paired with different notes, the familiar material unfolds in an entirely different way.

Fragrance descriptions may use the words incense, olibanum and frankincense. None of them alone indicates how bold a composition will be. A fragrance pyramid conveys an artistic idea rather than revealing the complete formula, so the entire accord around the incense matters.

1. L’Artisan Parfumeur Passage d’Enfer Eau de Toilette reveals incense’s lighter side

In Passage d’Enfer, incense is framed by white lily and white musk. The composition was created by Olivia Giacobetti. The flowers and musk retain the resinous theme while lending it more light and calm, making the fragrance a gentle introduction to the note.

Passage d’Enfer also comes in an Extrême version, where incense and lily meet vanilla for a fuller effect. If transparency is what you seek, it makes sense to start with the eau de toilette rather than automatically choosing the richer version.

2. Serge Lutens L’Orpheline leaves incense almost unadorned

L’Orpheline draws a fine, silver-grey line of incense. Serge Lutens describes the fragrance as ethereal and intimate, connecting its mystical mood with olibanum.

There is no marine or overtly forest-like narrative here. Its restrained character helps reveal whether it is the material itself that appeals to you, or its familiar setting of smoke, wood and other resins. For this, L’Orpheline is useful to compare with a more layered composition.

3. Issey Miyake Le Sel d’Issey Eau de Parfum takes incense to the sea

For Le Sel d’Issey Eau de Parfum, the brand lists a salty accord, seaweed and oakmoss. Incense, dry amber and burning wood appear alongside them.

Salt gives the resins a dry tension and moves them away from sweet ceremony, although it does not make the fragrance literally marine. The key interest lies in the contrast between shore and sun-warmed wood, rather than velvety darkness.

4. Aesop Hwyl tucks incense into a forest accord

Hwyl is built around cypress, incense and vetiver. Its official description also names cedar, hinoki, thyme and elemi, and Aesop places the fragrance in a smoky, woody and spicy family.

Incense links coniferous freshness with earthy vetiver without taking over the composition. This pairing suits anyone seeking a woody direction without dessert-like sweetness: cypress and vetiver shape its character more convincingly than the word incense itself.

5. Diptyque Eau Duelle Eau de Parfum speaks of incense through spice

In Eau Duelle Eau de Parfum, Diptyque combines incense with bourbon vanilla, pink pepper and cypriol. The brand separately notes cypriol’s smoky nuance.

Sweetness cannot be entirely avoided here. Yet the spicy-vanillic setting gives the resin depth and a dry outline, without creating a literal story of smoke.

How to find your own direction

First, identify what exactly puts you off in incense fragrances: sweet resinousness, dense smoke or the recognisable church-like image. Then compare two contrasting directions—for instance, Passage d’Enfer with Le Sel d’Issey, or Hwyl with Eau Duelle. The difference between them will quickly show which role of incense feels closer to you.

Let a composition you like develop on your skin. A fresh or salty opening may later give way to a woody or musky base. This is when it becomes clear whether the transparency remains, or whether the resins ultimately gain density.

White musk brightens incense, salt makes it drier, cypress and vetiver strengthen its forest side, while vanilla and pepper add spicy warmth. Once the desired direction is clear, it is easier to choose a fragrance by its accompanying notes rather than a single word in the pyramid.
