Osmothèque in Versailles Will Show Perfumery Beyond the Bottle

A new exhibition at Espace Richaud will trace the history of French fragrance in a single journey, from early texts and craftsmanship to contemporary compositions and olfactory installations.

A display case usually leaves us with a bottle, a name and a note pyramid. Versailles offers a longer story: how fragrance travelled from knowledge of raw materials and apothecary treatises to the fashion house, the luxury object and cultural memory.

From 4 November 2026 to 7 February 2027, Espace Richaud will host The Soul of French Perfumery: A Journey to the Heart of Elegance and Craftsmanship. The exhibition is being prepared by the City of Versailles and Osmothèque, the International Perfume Conservatory based in the city.

The route will span the period from the Renaissance to the present day. Organisers promise to show the transformations French perfume has undergone, from seventeenth-century pharmaceutical treatises to current fragrance compositions. This makes it possible to read perfumery not as a succession of famous bottles, but as the meeting point of history, technique, luxury and creative work.

The exhibition will draw on objects loaned by institutions, partners and private collectors. They will be joined by olfactory devices created specifically for the show, inviting visitors to approach the subject with more than their eyes.

The venue itself adds another layer of meaning. Espace Richaud is housed in a former royal hospital on Boulevard de la Reine, while Osmothèque provides the project’s scholarly and historical perspective. The account of French tradition thus gains both museum scale and a connection to a working perfume conservatory.

Guided tours at Espace Richaud, along with themed talks and workshops at Osmothèque, are planned around the exhibition. Those travelling to Versailles in winter may want to check the programme in advance: these additional formats could make a visit more substantial than a simple walk through the galleries.

In practical terms, Espace Richaud is at 78 Boulevard de la Reine, Versailles. According to the announced schedule, it is open Wednesday to Friday from 12:00 to 19:00, and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 19:00. Full admission is €7 and reduced admission €5; visitors under 26 and guests on the final Sunday of each month enter free of charge.

The exhibition has not yet opened, so it is too early to speak about individual exhibits or the experience of the route. Its premise is already compelling, however: French perfume is set to be presented as a system of people, materials, knowledge and objects from which the familiar bottle eventually emerges.
