Description

Rose and orange enter brightly, then disappear into a dry chamber of spice and wood.

Noir Epices by Frederic Malle opens with orange, geranium and rose before cloves, nutmeg, pepper and cinnamon take control. Sandalwood, patchouli and cedar create a dry, warm base, with vanilla rounding the edges rather than turning the composition overtly sweet.

On skin

Sensory profile

A shaft of orange light catches geranium and rose, but the brightness is quickly crossed by the dark geometry of cloves, nutmeg, pepper and cinnamon. Sandalwood supplies a smooth plane underneath, while patchouli and cedar bring earth and dryness. Vanilla remains at the margins, softening the grain of the woods. The image is warm and shadowed, with spice providing both movement and structure.

Practice

Where to apply

A strong match for autumn and winter evenings, from a quiet dinner to a gallery or formal gathering. Projection can extend beyond arm’s length and wear is often long, so a restrained application may be wise around colleagues or in smaller rooms.
