The search for a new fragrance molecule usually begins long before the first trials on a blotter. DSM-Firmenich and Boltz have announced a partnership intended to apply AI at this early stage of ingredient work.

A new perfume ingredient is more than an intriguing scent. It must still travel from an idea to laboratory assessment, property testing and possible use in a composition. It is at the molecule-discovery stage that DSM-Firmenich is beginning its collaboration with Boltz.
The companies intend to use artificial intelligence for ingredient discovery and development. In practical terms, the aim is to identify promising directions for further work more quickly—not to replace the perfumer with a finished formula.
That distinction matters to the industry. AI may help researchers work through a larger number of molecular possibilities and narrow the field of candidates for study, but a fragrance still emerges from the combination of chemistry, safety assessment, technology and the human sense of smell.
For now, the partnership remains an announcement: no new ingredients or finished fragrances have been presented publicly. It is therefore too early to say how store shelves may change. Yet its focus on raw materials indicates where technology may have its clearest effect on perfumery—not in the spectacle of a bottle launch, but in the earlier, usually unseen part of creating a scent.
For fragrance lovers, this does not mean an instant change to familiar notes, but the possibility of a wider field for future compositions. If such tools speed up research, perfumers may gain more time and more options for what an algorithm cannot ultimately decide: a fragrance’s character, balance and memory.
