bdk Parfums

bdk Parfums is an independent house founded by David Benedek in Paris and active since 2016. Its background lies in the family's fragrance trade, while the contemporary collection is built around moments, materials, and stories. Benedek sets the creative direction and invites different perfumers, giving the fragrances one narrative framework without imposing a uniform scent template.

Brand story and character

The Benedek family's history in Parisian perfumery began before the house itself. In the 1950s, David's grandparents, who had emigrated from Transylvania, gained authorization to distribute prestigious names including Worth and Christian Dior. In the 1960s, they opened a boutique at the corner of rue Royale and rue Saint-Honore, selling fragrance and luxury goods to international visitors in Paris.

David Benedek was born in Paris in 1989 into a family with Romanian, Algerian, and Moroccan roots. He first studied economics, then continued his education in Beijing and New York in 2010. After returning to France, he entered the Institut Francais de la Mode in 2012, chose the fragrance and cosmetics track, and studied materials, olfactory families, and the process of composing a fragrance.

Since 2016, bdk Parfums has been an independent house in the Palais-Royal district. Its fragrances begin with moments, words, and stories, whether real or imagined. There is no single preset formula: close attention to craft and the expressive qualities of materials provide the connection. In Collection Matieres, natural and synthetic materials are explored through origin, character, contrasts, and unexpected facets.

The division of roles matters here. Benedek shapes the house's cultural framework, while invited perfumers create the individual compositions. Serge Majoullier's Bouquet de Hongrie honours Edith Benedek and family memory: pear, blackcurrant, and strawberry move into Turkish rose, Sambac jasmine, and Lorenox, followed by musk, cedar, and amber. A personal narrative takes on a light fruity-floral form.

Dominique Ropion's Vanille Leather presents vanilla through white flowers and leather. Pink pepper and a violet accord open the composition; tuberose, Egyptian jasmine, and orange blossom form the heart; Madagascan vanilla, patchouli, oak, a leather accord, orris, and benzoin build the base. Vanilla is not isolated as a dessert note but placed between floral intensity, woods, and smoky leather.

Julien Rasquinet's Tabac Rose is built on another contrast. Pink pepper, a plum accord, and Italian lemon lead to Turkish rose, Madagascan cinnamon, and chocolate; tobacco absolute, patchouli, and labdanum anchor the dark base. Alexandra Carlin's Velvet Tonka connects orange blossom and almond with rose and Balkan tobacco, followed by tonka bean absolute, Madagascan vanilla, amyris, and amber woods.

Bouquet de Hongrie, Vanille Leather, Tabac Rose, and Velvet Tonka show the bdk Parfums method from different angles: a family tribute, an exploration of material, a direct rose-tobacco contrast, and a memory of warm almond-like tonka. What connects them is not one shared pyramid but the translation of an initial image into a precise composition. The perfumers' authorship remains a visible part of each fragrance's story.
