Chanel
Chanel is the French house whose history began with Gabrielle Chanel's first hat boutique in 1910. In 1921 she created N°5 with perfumer Ernest Beaux, establishing the first Chanel fragrance and a defining gesture of perfume modernism. Scent, name, and bottle formed one language rather than an accessory to fashion.
Brand story and character
Gabrielle Chanel opened her first hat boutique in 1910, followed by Deauville in 1912, Biarritz in 1915, and the premises at 31 rue Cambon in 1918. This progression shaped an idea of freedom, simplicity, and modern silhouette in which clothing accompanied movement. The same disciplined selection entered perfume in 1921, when Gabrielle Chanel and Ernest Beaux created N°5.
Abstract composition, a number instead of a descriptive name, and a restrained bottle extended her modernist method beyond dress. Presented on 5 May, the universal number required no translation and allowed form and context to carry meaning. Ernest Beaux created N°22 in 1922, while Société des Parfums CHANEL was established in 1924 to produce and sell fragrance and cosmetics.
Perfume thus became a systematic part of the house rather than a licensed afterthought. Later creations broadened the palette while retaining clarity, character, and emotional distance. Bottle, numeral, black-and-white graphics, freedom, and an abstract floral trail remain interrelated codes. Chanel helped make scent part of modern design, connecting composition with a cultural form shaped by the city, movement, independence, and Gabrielle Chanel's own outlook.
