Thomas Burberry founded his company in Basingstoke in 1856 with a practical response to English weather: outerwear had to protect without becoming heavy or restrictive. Movement, travel, open air, and freedom outdoors consequently became lasting themes. In 1879 he developed gabardine, a lightweight, breathable, weather-resistant fabric whose construction united performance and appearance.

That principle led towards the trench coat. The Tielocken, patented in 1912, was an important predecessor, while later military adaptations established details originally connected with protection, equipment, and movement. Burberry Check and the Equestrian Knight Design joined the trench as enduring codes, creating a British visual language poised between city and countryside, classic structure and modern ease.

Burberry Her, for example, combines berries, violet, jasmine, woods, and amber according to the house, illustrating rather than defining the entire collection.
