Givenchy
Givenchy is a Parisian fashion house founded by Hubert de Givenchy in 1952. Its style combines elegance, clean lines, and freedom of form. Fragrance joined this language in the 1950s, and L'Interdit, created for Audrey Hepburn and released publicly in 1957, linked couture, personality, and scent.
Brand story and character
Hubert de Givenchy founded his couture house in Paris in 1952. The first Séparables collection used blouses and skirts to offer a freer and more modern interpretation of women's dress.
Givenchy's style balanced aristocratic discipline with ease. Precise proportions and quality were intended to reveal personality rather than cover it with formality.
Hubert de Givenchy met Audrey Hepburn in 1953. Their creative relationship became central to the house's image of beauty as refined, individual, and alive.
L'Interdit was created for Hepburn and released to the public in 1957. Perfume thus became a direct extension of couture rather than an unrelated commercial category.
The house introduced its first men's fragrances soon afterwards. In 1989, skincare and makeup joined the beauty portfolio, with Le Prisme Visage marking the beginning of makeup.
Givenchy is part of LVMH and remains headquartered in Paris. Its heritage continues through new fashion, beauty, and fragrance collections rather than existing only as an archive.
In September 2024, Sarah Burton was announced as creative director of the women's and men's collections, adding a new interpretation of the principles established by Hubert de Givenchy.
Today L'Interdit remains an important fragrance memory through its contrast of white flowers and darker woods. More broadly, Givenchy continues to place individual character above formula and to treat elegance as precise, free, and slightly daring.
