Brand story and character

Comme des Garçons occupies a singular place in fashion through intellectual form and a refusal of familiar decoration. Rei Kawakubo uses contrast, asymmetry, altered silhouettes, and distance from literal beauty to create a cultural position rather than simply a clothing label.

The story began in Tokyo in 1969. Comme des Garçons Co., Ltd. was established in 1973, and the house presented in Paris in 1981. Restrained colour, graphic construction, and deliberate irregularity shaped a broad system of lines and collaborations around Kawakubo's authorial centre.

Comme des Garçons Parfums was created with Christian Astuguevieille in 1993, and the first fragrance followed in 1994. Scent became an image, material, and idea rather than an exercise in conventional harmony. Odeur 53 later embodied this conceptual direction particularly clearly.

Across fashion, art, and perfume, Comme des Garçons consistently challenges expectations. Its fragrances rarely act as a neutral background; form, material, and unusual associations make them memorable gestures.
