Francesca Bianchi
Francesca Bianchi is an auteur fragrance line created by Francesca Bianchi in Amsterdam. She develops the formulas herself in her laboratory; the concentrate is then produced in Grasse, while maturation, filtration, bottling, and packaging take place in Milan. Her compositions explore memory, the body, and intimacy through dense, layered textures.
Brand story and character
Before turning to perfumery, Francesca Bianchi studied art history with a focus on twentieth-century art and worked in art-book publishing. She lived in Florence, Berlin, Luxembourg, and Amsterdam. An interest in scent that began in childhood became an independent course of study after she read a book on natural perfumery; Bianchi created her own line in Amsterdam.
The author controls each composition from the beginning. She conceives and formulates every fragrance in her laboratory, and development can take from six months to several years. A family-run company in Grasse produces the completed formula. The composition then travels to Milan for maturation, filtration, bottling, and packaging. Her biography does not state the exact year in which the line was founded.
Bianchi's method is not based on opposing natural and synthetic materials. Naturals provide complexity, while molecules enable effects that natural ingredients alone cannot achieve; their selection serves the concept. Human intimacy often stands at the center, not as an advertising image but as an interplay of skin, powder, resins, musk, flowers, and animalic facets.
Byzantine Amber offers a dramatic interpretation of amber. Bergamot and cinnamon open the composition, geranium creates a spicy rose-like middle, and benzoin, labdanum, frankincense, leather, styrax, and ambergris form a dry, smoky, mineral base. The image of Byzantine mosaics and their darkened gold connects radiance with a sense of historical wear.
Unspoken Musk approaches musk in a softer, more intimate register. The house does not publish a complete pyramid but explicitly names musk, tonka bean, and iris butter as the key accords. Bianchi describes it as a personal, emotional musk in which tenderness sits beside the body. This reflects her wider interest in the duality of human experience.
Under My Skin is a 25% extrait de parfum and the author's interpretation of an animalic theme. Grapefruit, lavender, black pepper, and spices lead into rose, carnation, and iris butter; musk, castoreum, ambergris, a leather accord, costus, tonka bean, balsams, Mysore sandalwood, vanilla, and tree moss form a complex base. Iris softens the leather and animalic facets, turning them into a powdery texture.
Sex and the Sea also has a 25% concentration and grew from a memory of sun-warmed, salty skin by the sea. Mimosa, pineapple, coconut, immortelle, rose, and orris join sandalwood, myrrh, labdanum, benzoin, ambergris, civet, and vanilla. These four compositions reveal Bianchi's consistent signature: classical amber, musk, and leather structures become vehicles for personal, bodily, and historical associations.
