Brand story and character

Francesco Smalto was born in Calabria in 1923 and entered a cutting school at thirteen. This early training shaped his professional path: before opening his own atelier, he learned to construct menswear through several tailoring traditions.

Smalto later refined his technique in New York with Harris, tailor to President Kennedy, and studied in Paris with the Groupe des Cinq. His biography joins Italian origins, American experience, and Parisian training, with Paris becoming the centre of the future house.

The designer founded his own house in February 1962. Its atelier was first located on rue de La Boétie and later on rue François 1er. Ready-to-wear and accessories joined bespoke tailoring in 1967, extending the brand beyond made-to-measure suits.

Smalto’s signature construction featured a rounded shoulder, high armhole, defined waist, and square notch in the lapel. These were practical elements of garment architecture: fit, the line of the body, and exact proportions.

The house now identifies Studio Smalto as its artistic direction. This structure continues the brand beyond the founder’s era without assigning every contemporary decision to one individual or erasing the original tailoring system.

Fragrance belongs to the wider Francesco Smalto world, but it requires its own language. Bottles and names may echo the brand’s codes, while the character of a scent still rests on its composition.

FullChoke pour femme dates to 2004. Its opening combines pineapple, melon, cardamom, coriander, and pepper. Juicy fruit meets a dry, lightly sharp counterpoint, so the start is not simply a sweet fruit accord.

Jasmine, lily of the valley, and rose form the floral section of FullChoke. It sits between the fruity-spiced opening and the warmer foundation, joining contrasting groups without borrowing the vocabulary of menswear tailoring.

Amber, vanilla, vetiver, and musk shape the base. Amber and vanilla provide gentle warmth, vetiver adds dryness, and musk supports a smooth drydown. The structure moves from fruit and spice through flowers to a calm warm trail.

The character of FullChoke comes from pineapple, melon, spices, flowers, and its amber-vanilla base. Francesco Smalto’s history explains the name on the bottle, while the fragrance establishes a distinct identity of its own.
