Jean Paul Gaultier
Jean Paul Gaultier has developed a fashion language of corsetry, sailor stripes, mixed codes, and playful provocation since 1976. Fragrance joined this world with Classique in 1993, linking sculptural bottles, clothing, the body, and composition.
Brand story and character
Jean Paul Gaultier established his house in 1976 and built a language around contrast: corsetry and sailor stripes, couture and street culture, humour and technical discipline, visible construction and the living body. Rather than enforcing one ideal of beauty, the house mixes people, classes, genres, and identities, using difference as a source of form and energy.
Fragrance inherited this freedom to rearrange familiar codes without requiring every composition to reject every convention. Classique, introduced in 1993, established the dialogue between a corseted bust bottle, clothing, body, and scent. Leather, powder, flowers, and gourmand notes can continue the character of fashion without literally reproducing garments.
Les Ateliers Gaultier offers a contemporary way to work with the archive: Cuir 1976 refers to an archival leather jacket and combines orange blossom, candied chestnut, and leather, turning a historical object into a new contrast rather than a museum replica. Sculptural bottles provide a visual introduction, while fragrance develops the idea through time on skin.
Gaultier's provocation is therefore supported by discipline: select a culturally charged sign, shift its meaning, and allow it to become personal. Since 1976, and from Classique in 1993 onwards, perfume has continued the house's right to irony, contrast, sensuality, and freedom from fixed roles.
