Maison Francis Kurkdjian
Maison Francis Kurkdjian was founded in Paris in 2009 by Francis Kurkdjian and Marc Chaya. It joins an authorial perfume vision with a considered business model. Its central idea is the olfactory wardrobe: several fragrances can express different moods and facets of one person.
Brand story and character
Maison Francis Kurkdjian emerged in 2009 from two complementary professional paths. Francis Kurkdjian brought an independent perfumer's authorship, while co-founder and president Marc Chaya built a lasting structure around it. Both continued to shape product aesthetics and creative direction. Kurkdjian had already expanded the role of the perfumer before the house began: he opened a bespoke fragrance atelier in 2001, collaborated artistically with Sophie Calle in 2003, and created his first olfactory installation for Versailles Off in 2006.
These projects treated scent as personal object, art, and spatial medium. The house's central metaphor is an olfactory wardrobe. As clothing changes with rhythm, setting, and mood, fragrance can reveal calm, transparency, intensity, intimacy, or celebration without fixing one permanent signature. Freedom is supported by French perfume discipline, precise composition, materials, and craft rather than by randomness.
Women's, men's, and shared categories act as guides rather than rigid boundaries. Encounters with artists, artisans, musicians, choreographers, writers, and significant places further extend scent beyond the bottle. Since 2009, Maison Francis Kurkdjian has combined French savoir-faire with the contemporary freedom to choose and change one's olfactory presence.
