Brand story and character
Abercrombie & Fitch began with David Abercrombie in 1892 as a specialist outdoor shop for camping, fishing, and hunting equipment. The business was incorporated in New York State in 1904 and opened a Madison Avenue flagship in 1917. During the 1920s it broadened its range and helped shape new ideas of recreation and adventure. In the 1940s the company supplied equipment and uniforms to branches of the United States armed forces, while the 1950s and 1960s brought further expansion.
Oshman’s Sporting Goods acquired the brand in 1978, and in 1988 its headquarters moved to Columbus, Ohio, beginning another phase of development. The modern Abercrombie & Fitch is no longer an expedition outfitter, yet leisure, travel, and outdoor freedom remain part of its emotional vocabulary. A 2019 rebrand reframed that heritage for a contemporary audience, while the brand's idea of a long weekend and its references to classic coastal American style connect practical clothing with ease and movement.
