Boucheron
Boucheron is a Parisian jewelry house founded by Frédéric Boucheron in 1858. Its history leads from a workshop in the Palais-Royal to 26 Place Vendôme, while the fragrance chapter begins separately with the first scent in a ring-shaped bottle in 1988. In contemporary compositions, jewelry imagery emerges through the treatment of materials, contrasts, and the idea of a precious discovery.
Brand story and character
Frédéric Boucheron, the son of a cloth merchant, chose jewelry at the age of fourteen and learned the craft under Jules Chaise in Paris. In 1858, he opened his own business in the Palais-Royal. By 1866, he had registered his hallmark and established a workshop, gathering jewelers and artisans around him. The retail business thus acquired its own manufacturing foundation.
Early Boucheron stood apart not through one recognizable form but through its approach to materials and wearability. The house revived rock crystal, enamel, and engraved diamonds, combining gold with wood, mother-of-pearl, and hard stones. The clasp-free Question Mark necklace appeared in 1879. In 1893, Frédéric moved the house to 26 Place Vendôme, establishing its connection to Paris's jewelry district.
The fragrance chronology begins much later than the founding of the house. In 1988, Boucheron released its first fragrance in a bottle reminiscent of a ring. This was a direct translation of jewelry language into a perfume object, not the birth date of the brand. Boucheron has belonged to Kering since 1999. Interparfums has handled the creation, production, and international distribution of its fragrances under license since January 2011; in 2026, the parties extended their partnership for the main existing lines through the end of 2027.
La Collection develops images of travel and precious materials through distinct olfactory narratives. Cuir de Venise by Michel Almairac and Clément Marx refers to Venetian leather craftsmanship. A cocoa infusion, cinnamon, and ginger lead into guaiac wood, papyrus, and patchouli; cocoa absolute, cedarwood, and vanilla form a dense woody-leather base.
Alexis Dadier's Fève Tonka de Canaïma is built around tonka bean, associated in the concept with the landscape of Venezuela's Canaima National Park. Bitter almond and violet open the composition; tonka bean and rose absolutes meet patchouli; sandalwood, vanilla, and labdanum complete an ambery-woody profile. Here, the metaphor of cutting a gem is applied to the facets of a single material rather than to a stone.
Sonia Constant's Rose d'Isparta presents another form of this “cutting.” Ginger, incense, and ambrette surround Turkish rose, cinnamon, and saffron, while sandalwood, musks, and an amber accord shape the base. In Nathalie Lorson's Patchouli d'Angkor, pear and jasmine move into patchouli and black pepper, then guaiac wood and white musks. It was inspired by the temples of Angkor intertwined with the roots of ancient trees.
Singulier places cedar at the center; the house does not name the composition's author. Bergamot, juniper, and grapefruit give way to lavender, geranium, and clary sage, while cedar, vetiver, and patchouli form the woody base. These five fragrances show the breadth of Boucheron's perfumery: leather, tonka, rose, patchouli, and cedar each receive an independent structure, yet all are connected by the jeweler's habit of viewing a material from several sides.
