Clinique
Clinique is a New York skincare, cosmetics, and fragrance brand founded in 1968. The original idea came from Vogue editor Carol Phillips, whose research led her to dermatologist Norman Orentreich. The citrus floral Clinique Happy line, known since 1997, holds a notable place in the brand's fragrance history.
Brand story and character
Clinique was introduced to the public at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York in September 1968. The original idea came from Vogue editor Carol Phillips. During her research, she encountered the work of dermatologist Norman Orentreich, who was developing a three-step skincare routine: cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturising according to skin type.
Clinique launched on a substantial scale, with an initial range of 117 skincare and cosmetics products. The brand's history particularly highlights Orentreich's three-step skincare system. New York and 1968 are also recorded in the history of the Estée Lauder Companies.
Clinique's fragrance portfolio should not be reduced to its skincare principles. The Happy line dates back to 1997. Defined as a bright citrus floral direction, it builds its image around an immediately recognisable emotional name.
Clinique Happy lists ruby red grapefruit, spring mimosa, bergamot, and Hawaiian wedding flower. Grapefruit and bergamot represent the citrus side of the stated profile, while mimosa and Hawaiian wedding flower form its floral aspect. These are key notes of this particular Eau de Parfum, not characteristics of every Clinique fragrance.
Happy forms an independent citrus floral line within Clinique fragrances. The brand's historical approach to skincare remains part of its background, but neither determines the fragrance formula nor gives it medical properties.
Happy provides an established reference point in Clinique's fragrance history, but does not replace a complete archive. This account does not establish the exact date of the brand's first fragrance, the perfumer behind Happy, or the sequence of all later releases.
