Diptyque
Diptyque is a Parisian house created in 1961 by three friends from the arts. It began at a boutique on boulevard Saint-Germain where fabrics, found objects, and original designs met. Fragrance and candles grew from the same idea: scent, drawing, and object should form one imaginative world.
Brand story and character
Diptyque emerged in early-1960s Paris through Christiane Gautrot, Desmond Knox-Leet, and Yves Coueslant, whose backgrounds included architecture, theatre, and painting. In 1961 they opened their first boutique at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain, presenting their own work, furnishing fabrics, and objects found at markets and on journeys. The two-part shopfront inspired the name Diptyque and anticipated a method based on dialogue: eye and nose, nature and art, object and memory.
In 1963 the founders made their first scented candle, turning a utilitarian source of light into an object capable of changing the atmosphere of a room. Personal perfume, candles, and home fragrance have since remained connected through the environments that scent creates. Illustrators and perfumers work together so that image, lettering, ornament, and composition contribute to the same story.
The address at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain remains symbolically important and houses archives used by contemporary creative teams. Diptyque's strength lies not in a single floral or candle theme but in combining several senses. Since 1961, and through the decisive candle of 1963, the house has retained the freedom to mix disciplines.
