Lacoste

Lacoste grew from a practical sporting invention. René Lacoste won major tennis titles in 1926 and 1927 while questioning the restrictive clothing worn on court. With industrialist André Gillier, he founded the brand in 1933 around a lightweight petit-piqué shirt designed for freedom of movement. Its code, L.12.12, explains the construction: L for Lacoste, 1 for the material, 2 for the short-sleeved form, and 12 for the selected prototype. The crocodile derived from René Lacoste's nickname and became one of the first prominent logos placed on clothing. Colour versions followed in 1951, allowing the clean tennis form to move into everyday urban life. Lacoste thus sits between sport and fashion, taking movement and function from one and silhouette, colour, and cultural meaning from the other. Fragrance entered the brand world in 1968 with the idea of bottling the dynamism of Lacoste sport-chic. This did not require perfume to smell literally of cotton, tennis balls, or grass; it extended freedom, freshness, and composure into an invisible form. Current fragrance lines including L.12.12 and Lacoste Original continue to use the polo, colour, and crocodile as shared codes across generations. The 1933 invention remains the model for a broader world of clothing, accessories, and scent.
