Loewe

Loewe is a Spanish house whose history began in Madrid in 1846 with a collective of leather artisans. Working with materials remains central to the brand today, although its language has long extended beyond leather goods. Perfumery expresses the same approach through nature, color, and object design: the first fragrance appeared in 1972, and today's collections form an independent part of the Loewe world.

Brand story and character

Loewe's history began in Madrid in 1846. A small collective of Spanish artisans worked with leather in a workshop on Calle Lobo, making wallets, cases, boxes, and other objects of precise handwork. This episode matters as more than a founding date. It established a principle the house has preserved for almost two centuries: form grows from understanding a material, while modernity comes from applying accumulated craft knowledge anew. Leather therefore remains not merely one product category for Loewe, but the brand's historical language.

In 1872, Enrique Loewe Roessberg, a German leather craftsman living in Madrid, joined the workshop. The house's history links him to the technical organization of production and the unification of the business under his family name. A characteristic duality emerged: a Spanish house with a German name, rooted in Madrid's culture yet open to outside methods and influences. By the late nineteenth century, the workshop had expanded into a store and production site on Calle Príncipe, while its range gradually moved from small leather objects to bags and a broader idea of luxury accessories.

Craft at Loewe has never meant simply repeating old techniques. The account of its contemporary workshop stresses the union of knowledge passed between generations with new technology, experimentation, and material research. This gives the house a particular place among European brands: its heritage is visible but never used as static scenery. The construction of a bag, the treatment of a surface, an unexpected texture, or an intentionally free form shows how traditional skill can work in the present.

Loewe's visual system is also connected to art and culture. The house supports makers, artists, and designers, collects works for CASA LOEWE spaces, and develops the LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize. These initiatives continue the original theme of handwork while placing it in an international contemporary-art context. The finished object is not the only thing that matters to the brand; so do the way it appears, the time and technique involved, the maker's hand, and an intellectual relationship with materials. This position explains how Loewe collections can combine historical forms, popular culture, cinema, ceramics, and experimental design without losing their craft foundation.

From 2013, a major phase in the house's development was associated with Jonathan Anderson's creative direction. Craft received a more radical and culturally open interpretation, while fashion, object design, and art interacted especially closely. Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez have led the collections since 2025. The house describes their approach through the exploration of craft, artistic sensitivity, contemporary culture, and the sensual energy of Spanish life. The change in direction marks a new chapter without overturning Loewe's core principle: renewal should happen through work with objects and materials.

The fragrance division has its own documented history. In 1972, the house released its first women's fragrance, L de Loewe. The launch helped perfume develop an international presence, while scent became another way to convey Spanish heritage and an idea of craft. Yet a Loewe fragrance is not a literal accessory to a bag or garment. It builds a separate sensory environment in which composition, bottle color, object form, and campaign imagery work together.

The house's contemporary perfume language is particularly close to nature. After LOEWE 001 appeared in 2016, the collection received a new interpretation through the Botanical Rainbow system. Nine fragrance families form a color spectrum that presents scents as a palette, while rectangular bottles support a clear object logic. Rather than assigning the house one defining note, the system emphasizes a variety of natural impressions. Color guides the wearer between families and turns a row of bottles into one visual composition.

Other lines extend this approach. Paula's Ibiza connects fragrance with island freedom, physicality, and summer color; Un Paseo Por Madrid turns toward urban experience; Home Scents, launched in 2020, explores the smells of plants and the vegetable garden through candles, sprays, and diffusers. The owner profile also names Núria Cruelles as the in-house perfumer of Loewe Perfumes. Her work is described as joining scientific knowledge of molecules with memory, imagination, and artistic decisions. This reflects the wider culture of the house, where technical mastery is not opposed to emotional effect.

In perfumery, Loewe is a house for which scent belongs to a wider material and cultural system. Leather, fashion, art, botany, and color do not merge into one decorative image but offer different ways to speak about craft. A complete launch catalogue and authorship for every composition require a separate register and are not reconstructed here. The documented history already shows the essential point: from the Madrid workshop of 1846 onward, Loewe has consistently turned knowledge of materials into contemporary form, while perfumery translates the same principle into scent.
