Louis Vuitton
Louis Vuitton is a French house founded by Louis Vuitton in Paris in 1854. Its fragrance history began with Heures d’Absence in 1927, while the modern collection is shaped by Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud. He works at the Les Fontaines Parfumées atelier in Grasse and oversees the journey from raw material to finished composition.
Brand story and character
Louis Vuitton opened his first store on Rue Neuve-des-Capucines in Paris in 1854. The house grew from the craft of travel trunks, so movement, materials, and object construction became early codes. Fragrance entered this history not as an original category, but as a new field connected with the same idea of travel.
Louis Vuitton's first fragrance was Heures d’Absence, released in 1927 under Gaston-Louis Vuitton. Its name was connected with the family's country house, while the bottle and case referred to modern travel. This release established an early place for fragrance within the house long before the current catalogue took shape.
The modern chapter began in 2012, when Jacques Cavallier Belletrud became Louis Vuitton's Master Perfumer. A Grasse native and the son and grandson of perfumers, he works at Les Fontaines Parfumées, the house's creative fragrance atelier in Grasse. His role covers the entire journey from encountering a raw material to constructing and assembling the finished composition.
The geography of materials carries the travel theme into the formula itself. The house's Perfume Atlas describes 45 ingredients, including Rose de Mai from Grasse, Assam oud from Bangladesh, and bergamot from Calabria. This list does not impose one shared structure, but shows the range of materials and regions within contemporary Louis Vuitton perfumery. Cultural geography becomes a working method: origin enters the story, while a material's role is determined within each formula.
Imagination represents a tea-and-amber direction. The house describes it through the fusion of amber and black tea, creating a contemporary masculine profile. Ombre Nomade moves into darker territory, combining oud with benzoin, raspberry, and incense. The contrast of woody depth, resins, and fruit gives it an independent place in the catalogue.
L’Immensité offers a third route. Fresh ginger meets bitter grapefruit and is softened by amber. Comparing it with Imagination and Ombre Nomade shows that the collection is not built around one material: tea, oud, citrus, spices, and resins are organised into distinct compositional characters.
The object remains important in fragrance as well. Louis Vuitton offers bottle personalisation and a refill service that extends the life of the main object. The house's story therefore connects three levels: its craft origin in 1854, the first fragrance in 1927, and Jacques Cavallier Belletrud's present system, in which travel is expressed through raw materials, composition, and a bottle designed for continued use.
