Penhaligon's
Penhaligon's is a British perfume house whose story begins in late nineteenth-century London. William Penhaligon moved from barber and perfumer on Jermyn Street to the founder of a house now known for heritage, British wit, and recognisable collections.
Brand story and character
William Penhaligon moved to London around 1869 and in 1870 worked on Jermyn Street as a hairdresser and perfumer at the Turkish Hammam. Grooming craft naturally led towards scent as part of everyday culture.
Hammam Bouquet, created in 1872, became the first house fragrance. London, close observation, and the ability to turn a specific place into perfume formed an early identity. Penhaligon & Jeavons followed in 1880.
A Royal Warrant and a place within British perfume culture strengthened the house, but heritage now operates alongside active collections rather than as a single archival story.
British Tales, Potions & Remedies, Trade Routes, and Portraits frame the current catalogue, while Halfeti, Endymion, The Cut, The Coveted Duchess Rose, and Alula show its stylistic range.
Penhaligon's is sustained by several distinct lines rather than one signature hit, maintaining a recognisably British balance of history, character, and wit.
