Salvatore Ferragamo
Salvatore Ferragamo is an Italian house founded in Florence in 1927. Its identity began with women’s shoes, in which Salvatore Ferragamo united craftsmanship, structural study and expressive form. Fragrance developed this design language later: Ferragamo Parfums was established in 1997 as a dedicated part of the house.
Brand story and character
Salvatore Ferragamo’s Italian story began in Florence in 1927, when its first company was created to study, produce and sell women’s shoes. This origin still defines the house: Ferragamo’s idea of luxury grows from knowledge of form, materials and the way an object works with the body. A shoe is both an engineering challenge and an artistic object. Before returning to Florence, the founder had worked in the United States and opened the Hollywood Boot Shop in 1923, earning a reputation as the shoemaker to the stars.
In 1927 he chose Florence for its culture of art and craftsmanship, establishing a factory that also trained young apprentices and paired traditional skills with a more systematic approach to production. Ferragamo subsequently expanded its world: its first leather goods and women’s ready-to-wear appeared in 1965, followed by silk, accessories, menswear and men’s footwear.
Yet the shoemaker’s eye remained central, visible in the attention paid to line, proportion, structural balance and texture. The group describes its design as a union of style, creativity and innovation with Made in Italy quality and craftsmanship. Fragrance joined this history later through a dedicated corporate structure. Ferragamo Parfums was formed with Bulgari in 1997 to develop and distribute perfumes, and Ferragamo acquired Bulgari’s full interest in the venture in 2001.
These dates show that fragrance was developed as a specialised field rather than added casually to a famous name. Today, perfume is also listed among the categories developed through licensing. This model brings the house’s identity together with category-specific expertise. In fragrance, the Ferragamo code is best understood through its sense of form: bottle, name, colour and composition are conceived as a coherent whole.
Its Italian character is rooted not simply in decorative images of sunshine and celebration, but in Florence’s culture of making, respect for materials and desire to unite beauty with function. Salvatore Ferragamo therefore occupies a distinctive place in perfumery. Its fragrances inherit not a particular shoe design but a way of thinking: an object should be expressive, carefully resolved and made for a real relationship with the person who uses it. From the footwear workshop of 1927 to Ferragamo Parfums, the same principle endures—turning craft knowledge into a contemporary and recognisable language.
