Ex Nihilo
Ex Nihilo is the French perfume house founded in Paris in 2013 by Sylvie Loday, Olivier Royère, and Benoît Verdier. Its Latin name means “created from nothing,” expressing a desire to build a contemporary language across haute perfumery, design, architecture, and technology.

Sylvie Loday, Olivier Royère, and Benoît Verdier founded Ex Nihilo in Paris in 2013 around innovation and exceptional experience rather than a historical archive. The Latin name, “from nothing,” signals a clean starting point. French avant-garde culture and the optimistic design and architecture of the 1970s and 1980s inform a house that treats perfume as a precise, technological, artistic, and personal object. Creative freedom and collaboration with perfumers and artists allow architecture, design, art, and technology to enter composition. Natural and synthetic materials are used without a rigid hierarchy, with effect and expression taking priority over romantic divisions between nature and laboratory. Osmologue, a high-precision weighing and blending system, supports personalised variations and an individual olfactory narrative; materials and engraving can also individualise the bottle. Much of the range is produced in France, connecting technological modernity with local craft. Initiale, Interdite, Iconoclaste, Visionnaire, Babylone, and Quintessence provide frameworks for different themes while retaining the central method: free collaboration, exact execution, Parisian design culture, and room for personal interpretation.
