Les Liquides Imaginaires

Les Liquides Imaginaires took form through Philippe Di Méo at Paris Design Week in October 2011. A designer and artist, Di Méo approached perfume as a place where text, image, matter, and symbol could meet. The house returns to the idea of perfume as passage “through smoke,” treating incense, liquid, and scent as metaphors of changing states rather than as literal reconstructions of ancient ritual. Perfume can suggest medicine and poison, light and shadow, protection and seduction because it changes how a person and space are perceived. Di Méo works in a literary manner: a word, symbol, scene, imagined island, sacred water, wine, desert, or condition of the soul can precede the formula. The central organisational form is the trilogy, used to examine tensions such as profane and sacred, flesh and spirit, shadow and light. Les Eaux Delà, Les Eaux Sanguines, and Les Eaux Imaginaires map separate narrative fields, while island, river, and desert become imaginative states rather than tourist destinations. The contemporary catalogue retains trilogies and adds the Imaginarium, but the method remains consistent. Les Liquides Imaginaires asks fragrance to function as poetic and symbolic text, with imagination serving as a working material rather than decoration.
